My smaller 75L/20Gallon tank I purchased 2nd hand, Its one of the new style single curved front single piece tanks that are all in one (marketed here in Oz as Aquapro xxxx).
The problem is the filter intake tube. It's just an open piece of tube with a rubber stopon the end, there may of been something on the end originally I don't know. I've tried fine net (gets clogged to easy - plant debris mostly), Large netting tears fairly easy and thin plastic with holes drilled in it (this moved allowing a very pregnant guppy and a small bristlenose to get sucked up and squished through the pump [I've also lost a 1/2moon betta this way- except he got stuck in the pump to big to go through, and a large bristlenose got stuck in the tube, water flowing backwards over gills, these two died before I realised the seriusness of the problem and tried doing something]) Anyhelp help or suggestions would be greatly appricieated, Tanks

Can't help you w/ the topic, but I can tell you that my 33 gallon tank is 36"L by 18"H by 12.5"W, so your other tank w/ "issues" is defn. not a 40 gallon... The measurement is

Put a piece of sponge over the intake, the same sponge used for filters. Aqua Clear 300 sponges are a good size. Just poke a hole in it with a knife & slide it over the intake. It acts as a pre-filter as well.
