Hey guys i need some help on a filter. I went to and bought a 46 gallon tank. i bought the tank so i can put my black molie in it. Right now she has had to share a 10 gallon tank with the babies that another mollie had. So in order for the babies to have more room to swim and grow i bought a 46 gallon tank to put the moolie in it and let the babies have the 10 gallon for themselves. Anyhow i bought a filter call Penguin 330. It came with 2 bio wheels and 2 blue like pads and it has 2 more media slots to put other things in it. My question is and please dont luagh what is media? It says you can put media or your choice what does that mean. Any help is great. Thax.

Filter media is basically the stuff that you have inside the filter to clean the water. There are a lot of different types, but some of the main ones are as follows:

Sponge: this is usually used for mechanical filtration (physically removing dirt particles from the water)

Bio-media: This comes in many different forms and shapes, but they all do essentially the same thing and that is provide a large surface area for beneficial bacteria to live and breakdown waste products in the water (nitrogen cycle!)

Carbon: Used to remove any medications or chemicals that are in the water. Can also help remove tanins and other dyes. Carbon will only stay active for a couple of weeks before it needs replacing.

Floss: Fine mechanical filtration used to "polish" the water to make it crystal clear!!

There are many other different types, but these are the main ones, you basically decide what media you want in your filter. Personally I use coarse mechanical (sponge) followed by Bio media, then floss. I only use carbon when I need to remove meds, but you should use what suits you best!!

Hey deadlyalliance...ive also got a penguin 330. Great filter...the media is the blue pack which is carbon...change that once a month or so and you'll be ok! :p
