Right,

I've just cleaned out the filter, new carbon and new wool in it - started to pump the water through, ready to plug it in, and it pumped out one hell of a load of crap. Took ages to get the water flowing through to plug it in. Plugged it in, carried on pumping out crap and it sounds like its clogged and is pumping at about 50% of what it should.

So, I have a tank with a dangerous amount of sludge and a filter that seems to be buggered - any advice.

Its a Fluval MSF204 Filter.

Give it a good clean i bang them on the side when i have removed the propellar to help get the junk out of it, it seems to remove alot of waste then.

Is this an internal filter ? If so, there might be some air trapped which causes it to spurt rubbish out and not function properly. Submerge the filter entirely and give it a few 180 degree turns in the water to make sure there is not trapped air.

That will more than likely solve the problem !

Edit: just looked it up and seems like it's external. Well if that's the case I'd suggest checking the impeller and make sure there is no sludge or plant material preventing it from rotating.
