what type of filter is better for a betta, undergravel or internal. I was thinking undergravel because of the current. I have bought a new tank that i'm going to separate which is 18x10x10 inches about 6-7 gallons what heater would i need for this and any idea on lighting

For a split tank, I would go undergravel, so one betta is not getting all of the outflow from the filter. The right filter really depends on the tank. Also, I'm not the best expert on this, but for tanks under 2.5 gallons, I usually don't use a filter. For tanks over that, if it's split, I use undergravel. If it's not split, I use a lower power submersible filter. It just depends on the tank.

I use an undergravel in two of my tanks, and a small box filter in the other. The undergravel still have a pretty strong current and I use gang valves to slow them down. The tank the small box filter is in originally had an UGF but the betta in that tank hated it and hid all the time. I got the little box filter and he loves it. He plays in the bubbles.

i'm getting really confused now as i keep looking at all these filters and don't know what to get, i need a filter with hardly any current as they don't like it, has anyone got any ideas, i was thinking the UG filter but don't know what powerhead i would need, don't know how to use a box filter and most others have the current problem

large sponge filter has more surface area than under gravel and get more of the good guy bacteria growing on it so no water flow to worry about and would do an 18" tank easy only thing is it requires a pump and not a lot of people like the constant sound although they are quiet nowdays.........and you would require on for the u/g and if you have ever cleaned a tanks u/g filter you would be amazed how much muck is still in the tank under the gravel and they smell.....with a sponge you just clean the gravel and wash the filter in a bucket of water taken from the tank when you do a water change...nice and easy..... .......

For a tank that size, I would get a HOB, probably a Whisper mini. The flow's adjustable and not that strong, and they're cheap. They're cheaply made, too, but I've found they last about a year or so, long enough to make them worthwhile. Or a small Fluval internal, maybe. A sponge filter would work too.
