I'm picking up a 90l tank tomorrow (Courtesy of the buy/swap/sell section of this board :)) and wanted to know what advice people have when getting filters. As I understand it they can make or break the system.

So which should it be, Internal or External? Are there any brands which are always brilliant and are there any which are definite no-nos (noticed a thread saying that Fluval externals leak during power cuts  )

Is quality always related to price or is that not a good guiding factor with filters?

I've read a couple of threads but am still a little unsure.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

My full recommendation would be for an external Eheim classic 2213 :good:
I ran it on a slightly smaller 70l tank, but it's said to be suited for much larger thanks. However it's always much better to provide the best filtration you can.

You can pick them up cheap as chips on eBay second hand :good:

I pondered on what sort of filter to buy for my tank (it had an internal Fluval 3 at the time but didn't think it was up to the job) and read up a bit on various websites and Eheim seemed to be the best bet. They cost more but are better built. I settled for the Classic as it is cheaper than the Pro or Ecco models and have been around for donkeys years so they have been tried and tested. If you do buy an Eheim make sure that the deal you get includes media as it can be quite expensive. I got mine for around £50 with all filter media and double taps on an offer from an online store.

Cheers Guys that looks like the conclusion I was coming to (had been wading through the forum backlog and looking around on the net)

The Eheim External 2213 I got was from www.aquatics-online.co.uk and came with filter media and double taps but on the larger models it doesn't come with the media.

Just check your lfs. Mine was £49 everything included and ready to go !
