Hi,

I'm currently running a Fluval 3Plus in a 32gallon tank, but I am going to be looking at something bigger and better, filter wise I mean.

I want a filter that will turn over twice the reccommended water flow for the tank. I have looked at The fluval ones, as I'm obly ever had problems with other makes of internal filters, where as my fluvals work very well.

A few other questions will be these:

- How do external filters work?
- Will I need to adpat my tank?
- and which would you suggest

oh and the reason for double the recomended turn over is that I have messy fish :D

Thanks,

Well seeing no one cared to answer my post, I bought a Fluval 305 External Filter.

I've set it up, and its working a treat. Only problem is the lid of the tank doesn't fit properly now, its not that much of a prob, as it only sits up about an inch at the back, and slopes forward. But there isn't a gap for the poly's to escape from so not too bad.

Well done mate! I was just reading your topic and was about to recommend you the fluval 305 HAHA, yeah mine does the same, sits about an inch up at the back, but when i can be bothered i have little holes in my tank which im going to use so the lid will lay flat. Its a brillient filter! Shame i cut the intake pipe to short though HAHA, it says about 4" in the instructions and i did about 6"... still was to short lmfao now my filter is sitting on the yellow pages.

I had to cut mine too, but mine is fine :D
The tank lid has holes designed for the tubes, but the light boz inside (where the starter etc is) sticks down TOO close and it lies top of the clips. :shout:

but the tank is amazing now, its is really helping with the bog wood, as I soaked the wood for weeks, and it still leechs and its been in that tank around 6months or so. but the carbon in there cleans the water to crystal clear, I'm SO impressed.

a few more days and I can remove the fluval 3plus as the bacteria should have built up in the external. Its all good.

and your BN in your sig is SO much like mine :D

Yeah how long you leaving your old filter in there for... my fluval 4 has been in the tank for about 3 to 4 days now, slowly keeping it on for less periods... not sure when to take it out.

well I'm taking it out tomoz, what I've been doing is stirring up the substrate so all the mulm from there goes into the new external filter. this will help build the bacteris quickly. I wouldn't turn the old filter off though as the bacteria in the old filter will just die when the filter is off, so basically there's no point in having the old one in there if your doing it that way.

:good:

just a note about your sig, you need to add more neons and cardinals. A minimum of 6 is suggested. and as you rightly say your cories should be in at least a group of 3

Yeap i can totally agree, it is part of my plan also :D i have no job at the moment so funding for all the fishies is hard to do.

Just transfered my plecs tonight, my flipping Peckoltia is the quitest fish in the tank, yet it was attempting to jump out of the bag every 5 minutes! HAHA.

you think thats bad, I have two 1/2 grow polyterus senegalus and when thier tank sprung a leak, its was hell trying to keep them in their holding tank, had to place a towel over it with a peice of wood too, as they kept jumping up, and these things move faster than eels on land. :S
