I currently have a fluval 1 (an older model from about 2000...they look slightly different now). I'm finding it's not really providing enough flow of water from one side of the tank to the other.

Can anybody recommend a small filter for a 5 gallon, that is strong enough to move the surface of the water, but not to ripple the surface...sorry I'm fussy I know :)

I have an Elite Stingray 5 in my 5 gallon and it does me very well. It's in my divided betta tank and I have the flow directed to the side so it causes the least amount of aggitation and they are absolutely fine with it. The fish in the first divider (a plakat) gets very little aggitation and the other 2 practically nothing at all. Though the filtration as such I find fab :nod:
But that's just my personal opinion :)

thanks for the reply bloozoo.

You say you use it in a divided tank? Do you think the water would flow round the entire tank? Enough to make plants move?!

The reason I ask is I'm not getting a betta anymore, I'm going to get a dwarf puffer. But right now I'm suffering from bga. I've been reading up and apparently stagnant water isn't good. And the far left of my tank where the bga is at it's worse has virtually no flow. But then I dont want too much flow that it agitates the surface driving off the co2 :)

I quite like the sting ray cos it's smaller...I don't have much height in the 5 gallon and the fluval it sat right on the sand :S maybe thats why the flow is rubbish? perhaps sand is getting inside? but then when I clean it there's very very little sand in there.

//edit
Could you estimate the height of the stingray?

Without dividers I'd say it's absolutely fine - just angle the outflow to the side a bit. I'm sure it would do a great job and would suit what you need.
I stuffed a bit of floss filter media (from my other tank) in the bottom bit (there's not much room but it can be done) and it practically instant cycled the tank.

It's exactly 5" tip to top :)
