There are plenty of filters made for very small tanks. Whisper makes a model 3i that is intended for a 3 gallon and sits inside the tank, the i stands for internal. You can also get small sponge filters and box filters that work great on almost any tanks under about 10 gallons.

Is there an external one like an HOB? It's a 3 gallon hex and I think that Whisper filter would take up alot of room of the already limited space.

i have a 3 gallon tank with an undergravel filter in it. I just set this tank up and its cycling still, so i dont know how well it will work. It looks to me like thats the setup it was from factory.. It will just be for the feeder minnows and neons that i buy for my bichir so im not to worried myself but it could be enough?

That's what my tank came with, but I don't like those undergravel filters though.

from what im seeing today, i dont really like the performance either. I think im going to try a internal bio filter with the air bubbler setup instead.

you can typically find them for about $5

Thanks! I've heard of them before, and they still look like they would take up alot of room in the tank. I might just leave it unfiltered.

some of them are more compact. thats just an example. and thats also for a larger 10 gallon. they work quite well tho. not saying its the best option but it is a viable option

Do you know if I will have to change water everyday if I don't filter it?

It might though. I just want some hardy fish like danios, white cloud mountain minnows, or shrimp. With that small of a tank, daily water changes would be a breeze.

There are plenty of small HOBs, brands will vary with where you live. There are also a few tiny externals around, like the Eden.
