hello all, my tank is around 30L and i have a fluval 1 in it, these do not have flow adjusters on them like the bigger ones, so was just woundering what i can do to slow it down  It seems to strong for my boy. Just thought someone might have one of these and had found a good easy way of doing it, Thanks all

not 100% sure but you may be able to bye a spray bar, then maybe atach it to the filter outlet so that the holes are pointing at the glass. it might work. :good:

thanks for that but dont think that will work have the bigger filters with spray bars on them but the smallest one has a different outlet

I get a bit of a pair of tights and wrap it over the outlet, then attach with a rubber band.

 thank you tibby i would never have thought of that  will give it a go. (will have to buy a pair now)

Ok now i have that bit sorted wounderd if i could ask another, my boy has had a run in with the filter as well and has torn his tail to shreads, i actually caught him sitting there today with his tail in there, (ant ideas) , and also what is the best thing to treat it with melafix but nothing seems to be happing been using this for around a week now. but then again maybe its not working because he keeps going back there

Is it definitely torn, and not fin rot??

Again I would use tights :p Secure some around the inlets also. it means that larger bits won't get sucked in but should not create a huge problem if you are doing weekly water changes. I covered a filter completely using a pop sock in a fry tank, to stop the fry getting sucked in. Only thing is, after a few weeks there was a fair bit of algae on it, but you can just replace it :p

thank you again, yeah im 99% sure its the filter, tail was fine one min went out came home and it was a mess, i thought he may have been tail biting, so started using melafix but not getting any better, then today looked in on him and he was sat with his tail in there  so popped a bit of food in to move him, and it was worse again. I will use the pop sock as you said but is there anything different i could treat him with or should i just do a water change and carry on as i am.

what tibby recommended is exactly the solution i used a while ago when i had the same issue. i had myself convinced that it was the filter that ripped my guy's fins as well. i caught him chilling under the filter with his fins sucked up against it and it kept getting worse. I had had him in that setup for almost a week w/o any probs too.

It was indeed fin rot tho and he just liked to hide under the filter.

Might want to treat with Maracyn 1 & 2. It can't really hurt and he is now prone to getting fin rot if he does not already have it.

My guy lost his entire back tail and a bit of his top fin....... had I not been chalking it up to the filter, he probably wouldn't have lost much finnage at all

edit: just for reference, my guy didnt show the signs of fin rot and i would leave for the day and come back to see huge chunks of fin missing. every time he was chillin under his filter inlets. Then i put pantyhose over the inlet and he still lost more fins... i considered it was tail biting but decided to put him in a treatment tank with Maracyn. Once he started getting some regrowth i moved him back to the large tank and he's been good ever since.

Hi, back to the filter flow question......try getting a smallish, cylinder shaped piece of coarse foam filter media, snip out a chunk just big enough for your filter outlet and push it onto the outlet and fasten with elastic band. Just remember to clean at water changing time.
