I have a 180 litre tank that i am setting up at the moment. I am going to fill the thing up with water this week (figured it would make a better environment for the fish :D ) . I saw in one thread somewhere that someone said not to use the garden hose due to chemicals in the hose pipe or something. Is this correct? im sure ive done this with an old tank i inherited.

Im hoping this isnt correct, as its would be easier to fill it up with the hose rather than umpteen buckets splashing all over the place. using the hose i can aim the water better and not muck up all the sand and other stuff in the tank..

Any comments?

Cheers

I filled my up with the my hose - although i did run hot water through it first to try and get rid of anything that may be lurking in the hose itself!

When you fill it up with the hose, check you dont put it tap on fully or it will move all your sand/gravel. i only put it on a little bit and that was fine for me. just secure the hose on the tank (resting a lid on it for example) and have a coffee whilst it fills up

good call.. thanks...

its a juwel tank with a built in filter, so i was going to take the media out and stick the hose pipe in there. So if i put it on slow as you suggested, i think this should work well....

Well if that is the case its too late for me, I have been using a garden hose and tap fixing from B&Q for the last hmmmmm... 8 months, I have never experience any thing wierd and no fish have croaked it. And parameters are always fine.

I think sometimes people look a bit too hard into these things when its probably specualtion.

like cris said secure the hose, mine fell out the tank at the weekend and sprayed water over my floor and telly   , luckily it wasn't on fast, but keep an eye on it.

also remember if you put the hose into the tank when you first turn on the water it pushes out all the air of the hose and starts bubbling in the water which can sometimes dislodge the hose. That is how mine fell out.

I used the hose to fill my tank for the first time.

I would love to use it for water changes because bucketing 60-80L gets boring after a while, but I'm a bit worried about filling it from the hose then adding the de-clorinator after...I like to pre-mix it first.

But I have heard some people add the de-clorinator to the tank last without problems...

python. And for those of you in the UK check the DIY pinned topics. No nasty chems

Most manufactuarers of hoses these days use Food safe or food quality plastic. Unless the plastics made on a commercial scale.

The pipes your water comes through may pose a bigger threat to your fish.

Hi. Most people would not advise using a green or black garden hose for drinking water. A white hose is preferred. Having said that i've drank from a green garden hose many times. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just run the water that's been sitting in the hose out of it so the water you put in the tank is fresh. Other than that i would just go for it.
