so it seems i have a lazy sandshifting starfish because the surface has brown patches forming. what is this exactly and is it normal? should i take steps to change this? Thanks in advance

the tanks been running for a long time but the sand is only been in the last 2 weeks.

Will possibly just be a diatom surge then..this feeds off silicates, etc in the new sand and will slowly die back over time. Some hermits and snails will graze on this.
Will be important to spot feed your sand sifter until the sand bed matures however as they work through the sand to feed on organisms that live in there when it is mature....when on the surface, place some food close to him until your sand bad has matured.

forgot to ask whats best to feed a starfish. the fish are fed on mysis shrimp.

any frozen or even something like new era pellets...best do this at night or the fish will steal it on him
