Hey all, I have been considering stocking my ten gallon with fiddler crabs, and with some research, I have decided to go foward with it. However, I have seen some conflicting information, so I came here to ask.

I have the tank set up for fiddlers now, but the only 'land' is part of a large rock sticking up, about 5 inches out of the water. Once the water clears and it looks nice, I will post a pic, because I'm not sure if it is enough land for the crabs.

I also am not sure about how many crabs I should get. Some sources say that a male/female pair is best because multiple females will kill each other, other sources say to have 4 females per male, but only 1 crab per 3 gallons, meaning my tank is to small for 5 crabs. Not sure what to make of that.

I read that the sand should be at least 4 inches deep, but is that at the shallowest point or the deepest point? I have the sand sloping, and at the deep end it is about an inch, and at the shallow end it is 5 inches (with the rockon the hill).

Do I need to cycle the tank before I put the crabs in it? I didn't see anything about this.

I understand that the tank needs to be brackish, and I will do that. :good:

I have also read conflicting information about fish being able to be with them. I would worry about the fish becoming food, but a trio of guppies would look neat with them.

I plan to keep the filter running like normal, but I put the arm extension on the filter intake so that it could reach under the water.

Any other suggestions or advice about fiddler crabs would be appreciated, as well. :)

Oh, and possible names for the crabs include Blake, Vaughie, Phil, Sig, (Cornilea) Marie, Maverick, Bandit, etc.

i dont have any information on the crabs but the names are great and of corse is the show they come from... DEADLIEST CATCH...and i asume you chose names off that programe is becuase it is a crab fishing show
such a good idea :good:

Fiddlers spend more time on land than they do water. You're better off making a sandbed rather than just a rock sticking out of the water.

The only aggression between fiddlers is usually between two males during territory disputes. 1m/2f should be comfortable in a 10g.

It means the higher end. Fiddlers like to burrow on land.

They're hardy enough to go into an uncycled tank, but as always, it's better if you do cycle it.

Fiddlers are peaceful. I've kept guppies and their fry along with fiddlers fine. In a 10g though, there isn't going to be much space.

A power filter? The waterfall could be pretty noisy like that, and could disturb the substrate.

Grr, I can't figure out how to make enough dry land while having the water high enough that the filter will run. I guess I need to get more sand.

I find a little internal filter works great for a 10g. I use a Rena Filstar Mini for mine.

What shape is your tank, incidentally? 10g tanks I've seen tend to be as tall as they are wide. If this is the case with yours, perhaps an idea to consider would be put in a lot of bogwood and work on a mangrove root type setup for some redclaw crabs...?

Fiddler crabs are also brackish and need aquarium salt. My manager at Petsmart said that you can put them in all water, but I am unsure if that is true or not.

Remember its marine salt though not just aquarium tonic salt. They live on sand banks in the wild, its best to replicate their natural habitat than have them "make do" in what we want them to live in.

PM me for a link!! the process is complicated, but more than worth it!

OMG and he is the manager???? they are land creatures!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they breed and eat in the water, but live on land. geesh, they need marine salt, lol not fish keepers snake oil! (aquarium salt)

Ok, I have fiddled with my tank (pardon the pun) and have managed to get it to where it is one third land, with a sandy beach as the land. I can't get it any more because the water has to be high for my filter.

I have never used any other type of filter, and am honestly rather nervous about trying a different kind.

The aquairum is the normal rectangular shape.
