Soft thick substrate is a must. I use pool filter sand. They love to burrow. They also like other hiding places, rocks, caves and plants. Seal your tank, mine has climbed into my aquaclears twice this week. If you dont have an aquaclear i'd suggest one. the was it is designed it is almost impossible for the eel to get into the impeller. I had an emperor 400 on this tank but switched when he got into the impeller assembly andI had to break it to free him.

Mine eats brine shrimp and krill. Sometimes he will take the krill from my hand. Becareful, they are called spiny eels for a reason, I stabbed my fingers on his tail getting him out of my filter the other night.

i rearanged my tan k with lots of caves and hiding places, he love being in this long hollow bamboo ornament. if an aquaclear is a filter it dont matter coz i just use an eheim profesional. hes settleing in very well :D and hes really interesting, his name is Pyro :)

Yes an aquaclear is a hob filter. I'm hoping to switch to an overfill soon for my tank so I don't have to worry as much. I named mine Beavis. I'm building some PVC caves for him. I found an article to make an eel lair that is basically a double layer tank. The second layer is only a couple inches thick. I will see if I can find it again.
