I just got a bunch of plakats (short-tailed bettas). I put the males and females in their separate quarantine jars, and placed them next to each other. Well, after 3 days, quite a few of them were building bubble nests. And to my surprise, two of the nest builders are females. I rechecked to see if they were females, and I clearly saw their white egg tube. One of these spunky females even flares at me when I look at her.

Has anyone ever had a female who built a bubble nest?
Is this a plakat thing?

Yep, it's not unusual to have the odd betta girlie who makes bubblenests. :)

My female Pearl is a pink cambodian CT... the most ladylike fish I've ever had and she nests almost constantly. Never a full-blown, grouped nest like Jerry's, but nonetheless, most mornings I wake up to a fairly thick band of bubbles in her tank.

I take it to have the same meaning as when males nest: that they are happy and healthy. So I'm not fussed.

Congrats on the new bettas, by the way. ;)

I've had a couple of females build nests before, but Wuv has mentioned that sometimes young male fish can sport a false ovipositor, so I guess it could go both ways -_-
