One of my girlies looks like she's ailing and upon closer inspection, it looks like her egg sac has burst. She's no longer eggy and is trailing a bit of necrotic tissue. Her tummy is a bit black looking. She has a hollow spot where this all should be-meaning her profile has a chunk out of it in the abdominal region. However, she's hungry as a horse and I'm working at making sure she gets alot to eat as her sisters are quite aggressive about pushing each other out of the way. I've never had females before so am lacking experience with this. All the others are phat and sassy. She's a bit weak but I hate to move her as I think it would stress her even more. Thanks in advance!
EDIT: A FEW M INUTES LATER-- IT SEEMS HER STOMACH CONTENTS ARE COMING OUT WHEN SHE EATS. THINK I'LL MOVE TO HER TO A LITTLE HALF GALLON BOWL. WHAT TO DO?? THANKS IN ADVANCE!

She's in a 39 gallon community tank with girlies, corys, clown loaches and a plec. She's trying to search for stuff on the bottom of the tank so is hungry. Gotta give her credit for not giving up the fight.
I bought this stuff called bio-bandage this afternoon. I'm going to hold off until I get some more replies before trying it. It supposedly binds up the wound. I hate to give up on her just yet as she's got a fighting spirit. The minute she gives up then I'll take action. Thanks guys for posting.

Yes, I agree, don't flush it if it's still fighting.

Also, tell us about your experiences with the bio-bandage, I'm sure it would be useful for someone.

I wish you and your fish good luck :(

After some more thinking I wonder if somebody in the tank didn't give her that wound she has...
I have a clown loach who is very feisty and then there are her seesters .... I dunno just food for thought.

Someone mentioned flushing... please know that this is NOT considered a humane form of euthanasia, and will create a great deal of suffering.

If the female has a large open wound, and her stomach contents are pouring out from the said wound, this is probably not an injury that will heal. Humane methods of euthanasia include destroying the brain (NOT decapitation), or submersion in a mixture of tank water and clove oil. Destroying the brain is quickest but a bit messy, and involves either crushing the entire head in one swift, killing blow, or "scrambling" the brain. I personally am not a fan of either method as it involves taking the fish out of water, not to mention how traumatic it is to the owner. But some people do not believe that clove oil is humane, even though it has proven anesthetic properties, so I presented both methods.
If you use clove oil, you should do as follows:
- Purchase a small bottle of clove oil, found in most health stores as a natural remedy for tooth aches. Note that you should NOT use clove scented oil, as this is not the same substance.
- In a small container with a lid, mix about 50% water and 50% clove oil - you can use much less, but the more clove oil, the quicker the death. DO NOT mix with Vodka as suggsted on some sites; alchohol is very painful on gills and open wounds.
- Shake the water and oil thoroughly until the water is cloudy with dispersed oil.
- Scoop the betta up into a small cup with some tank water. Gently pour her into the solution.
- The fish should go still almost instantly. Gill movement will cease shortly thereafter, followed by death. It should not cause pain; clove oil contains the same anesthetics used when operating on fish.
- When you are certain the fish is dead, you can remove and dispose of the body. Some individuals will destroy the brain or freeze to be extra sure, but once the eyes have clouded, color has faded, and slime coat is starting to shed, you can be assured that the fish is quite dead.

Please remember, freezing, boiling, flushing are all unacceptable methods of euthanasia.

Good luck, wether you chose to attempt treatment or end her pain. So sorry about this unfortunate accident.

I keep a bottle of clove oil onhand at all times in case I have to do this. I'm really glad you posted what you did because more people need to know this information. I knew about this but others who read it will now have more information when they have to make such choices. That's the way I learned about it. Thanks for your time and effort!!

jollysue-so happy to see you on the forum again! Thanks for your good wishes. I took her out of the tank last night and put 2 doses of bio-bandage stuff on her and let her sit in a small bowl for a bit. I dropped her on the floor during the 1st treatment due to her thrash factor. She's mighty strong for a little injured fish!
This AM I expected to see her floating but there she was vying with her sisters. I think the treatments really helped her alot. So...she's a gal who's had a hysterectomy and maybe she'll actually survive.
I don't know about keeping her seperated as I don't have a way of heating a small bowl and she is happiest in her own tank. (??) I'll take her out for a second day of treatment later on and try to keep her off the floor this time.
good to see you jollysue.

I have a feeling you're pretty good too though. I'm not working now which gives me time to let the cat in and out all day long and stuff like that.

Did you retire? Whiskers would like a walker. :D

I just went back to work after over a week off on administrative leave. Because I have been with the organization so long no one believed the boy's accusation. I got lots of support and got paid when I was "officially" cleared by licensing and Child Supportive Services. It was very non stressful for me, but it was lots of work for everyone else. The boy said I was molesting him at night. Ten teen boys in five rooms--he has a room mate--none of 10 boys knew it was happening? In 17 and 1/2 years never a hint of any such thing. So I got a paid vacation w/o it coming out of my vacation time. The therapists think he believes it and is confusing reality and dreams. Most of the staff think he is faking and malipulative. :dunno:

I wish licensing had been too busy to investigate, and I had gotten a few more weeks off. I have been requesting time off for months, but we are always short staffed.

Yeah, what's the saying "in your dreams"? Sounds like manipulation to me. Well, you got a few days off and the kid revealed more of his not-so-nice nature. Sounds like he's the big loser in this scenario. I guess you have to expect such events in places where people are in treatment but still... It makes me wonder about that Foley guy and his overly friendly emails... I mean the young man he supposedly chose is not all that physically attractive.. What's up with all that? I'll take having animal friends anyday-less complicated and more loving.
I retired in a way and in a way not-definitive answer huh? Doing my own projects and volunteer work at a forest preserve etc etc.,selling stuff on ebay and letting the cat in and out all day long.

Good luck with your workplace. You can PM me if you need a good word once in awhile.

PS--too long of a commute to walk Whiskers unless he can come to my house.

I don't know the Foley guy. I don't watch much news. Yes the boy has problems, and owes several appologies no matter the cause of his delusion.

Sounds like a good new beginning. What do you do on ebay?

How's the little lady?

The little lady is in a small bowl right now after receiving her 2nd treatment. Once again she got out of my hand and flopped onto the top of a speaker. I gave her some food and told her she has to eat and get better. She's not looking well so I dunno... This AM she had bloodworms trailing out of her side as she was eating them. She's really thin so not absorbing much needed nutrition evidently. Flake food if it's broken up into small bits seems to stay in better.
Selling off some of my accumulated junk and stuff from my parents' estate that's been in storage for 3 years now. Got some fish related stuff maybe like this huge fluval filter I got talked into buying at Petland. It's big enuf for MarineLand! Lots of Florida related things including a commemorative afghan from Fort Myers Beach, 1995. Not a hot ticket item. I can PM my seller name in case you are an ebayer like me. I just sold an inflatable 11 foot boat.
take care miss
