Female Bettas

Can female Bettas be kept in a community tank? I seem to recall lfs's keeping Bettas in with other fish.

Usually, but it's sitll a bit risky, depends on the size of you rtank, and what the other occupants are

As you'll see in my "relocating" post,keeping the community may take a bit of trial and error.Be prepared to be flexible and make changes as/when/if needed.

As Koda said, you may need to try out several combinations of females to see which get along. You'll need at least 4 bettas to spread out the aggression, which means a 10 gallon tank is a minimum. Plenty of hiding places, such as caves and plants, are a necessity.
