The not so good lfs near me( upgraded from bad as the owner refused to sell 3 goldfish with a small bowl to someone on my last visit) has got female bettas in.As Irarely see them for sale locally I was thinking of buying some to try and breed later on. I have read about aggressive behaviour and would like to know
are there any other fish they are incompatible with in a community tank?
I plan on buying 4 --2 each for my 3ft and 4ft tanks keeping a space free in each of my 2ft in case of problems.
Is 4 too many?I just want to make sure I get a suitable match up the line.Ive got 5 male vts
cheers

Four would be ok if you are keeping them all together.

Keeping 2 female bettas in a tank will invariably lead to one getting bullied.

What other fish are you planning to keep with them or would they be on their own?

The 4ft has giant danio/moonlight gourami/swordtail/cherry barb/rainbow shark/bn plec
3ft has bol ram/zebra loach/black phantom tetra/scissortail rasbora/pearl gourami+a female krib& bn plec
Ireally dont think I could keep 4 together withoutsome seriuos relocating of fish as I have baby angel fish which will have to be seperated at some time in the futureand moved to the bigger tanks. If I get 2 and put them into seperate tanks would this work?
At the end of the day its not really that urgent whether I get them now or not but it would be nice to know for future reference :D

I know the generally "rule" is to have 4 or more - but I have two in my one tank (though it's 20 gallons) and they couldn't get on any better if they tried. They came from different stock and are not siblings and the one is much larger even than the other.
So I think it depends on the individual fish really and how much space they have to feel happy and secure.

Yep you can keep as many as you want in seperate tanks as long as they are 1 gal or more 2.5 is better. they breathe air though so they have to be able to reach the surface easially.

Sorry, breeding is not going to work. For starters, breeding is an awful lot of work. Second, they're VT's, which flood the market and are very hard to sell. Third, they're way too old to breed. You also have no idea where they come from or anything.

Gosh don't know how I missed that last sentence of Weaver's - you're absolutley right OohFeeshy !

Ihave no intention of selling any vts.I just thought that i would like to have a go at breeding a pair at some stageto see if I can.

Yes, but what could possibly be several hundred babies, all the males of which need to be jarred etc. is really not the best thing to do to see if you 'can'.

Ok bad idea then
Got a couple of fancy cts and a sd so if I ever do decide to breed bettas will go with them.
Thanks for replies
