I have a spare tank and I'd like to get back into Bettas. Thing is my tank is 12 gallon (UK) so a single male would like quite lost in it, my LFS has some amazing females instock and they're looking attractive to me. I'm sure I've seen some nice groups of females kept in a tank but I am a little wary that they'd fight a little, would three females be okay in 12 gal? I'd add them all at the same time in a mature tank, they're fairly large so although this would be quite a bioload it should outweigh the fact that adding them at different times may make them fight. So what does everyone think? Should this be a suitable set up? It'll be heavily planted as well. Cheers guys

In a 12 gal, I would say 5 would be a good number. This will help to spread out any bullying. You'd need to heavily plant the tank so they have lots of hiding places.

It's a good idea to add them all at the same time, this way they can establish their pecking order. It might take weeks for them to settle down and some people have had to remove the odd girl because of extreme aggression.

Be careful when selecting your girls as quite often there may be the odd juvenile male amongst them. We actually had 3 males in a group of 8 females once lol

Don't go by the white ovipositor as juvenile males can show them too.

Female tanks can be great fun but be ready for some aggression until they settle :good:

I have 5 girls in my 12 gallon along with pygmy cories and an apple snail. It works very well indeed and they get on just fine.

i have one male fighter in my 12 gallon tank and he loves cruising around it.
