Hi,

Sorry if this has been posted before, but I have four tetras and would like to feed them a little bit of veggies every one or two weeks. What kind of vegetables can I feed them? I've heard about peas and lettuce, and I just want to make sure.

Thanks,
Yuxi

you can feed them peas. i feed my africans frozen peas all the time. love them! just thaw the peas and rub them over a mesh strainer to get the shells off. they do not seem to like the shells and the shells will clog the filters.

lettuce is good. kinda messy. leftovers can clog filters also. you can make daphnia from lettuce to feed to your fish. take a baby food jar and lid, fill with tank water and add a peice of lettuce. put on the lid and set in a sunny window for about 24 hours. after that take out the lettuce, or add it with the water and dump the water into your tank.

cucumbers are also fed to fish. you will have to weight the slice of cucumber down so it does sink. you can also get veggie clips from the lfs for them also.

i feed my fish 3 times a day. am-flake food, noon-veggies and pm-emerald green.

For the peas, should I remove the outer skin and warm them before putting them in?

Ok, I tried peas, but the fish didn't even look at them. Should I try cucumbers next?

My fish absolutely love peas. I heat them for 5 minutes in the microwave to soften them up, otherwise, they are too hard for the fish to eat. Just remember to remove the shell...

more than likely they are goin g to have to get used to the idea that the veggies are their food. they do not know any better. when i first started feeding my africans veggies that was all that i offered. then they ate them. shells should be removed and no the do not need to be warmed. need to be thawed if frozen though.

Semper Fi,

When you say a baby jar for creating Daphnia, will any jar with a lid suffice? How much lettuce? Does it have to be lettuce?

Yuxi,

Apologies for the temporary hijacking of your thread.

i am used to typing baby food jars, but yes it can be any jar with a lid. i use this recipee for fry food. lettuce works best. have not tried anything else.

Hmmm, when I got home, the peas are all gone. Apparently they won't eat them immediately after I put them in. :p
