Hi ;)

Just wanted a bit of advice about feeding my new fish...

I have a 125l UK tank - which is about 5 wks old, water all tested and levels seem fine so far - with 3 platys and 2 guppies recently added.

1) I'm going away for 4 days next week. Will the fish be ok without food during that time? The books I've read indicate that this should be fine but I wanted to check with some experts ;)... I guess fish are cold blooded and don't need feeding like humans do!

2) I'm not feeding the fish anything other than flake at the minute and wanted to start varying the diet a bit to keep them in top condition... Any advice on what else I could add? Maybe some live foods or, as I've read, lettuce or peas!!!!!!! :S

Cheers

Scott

4 days is nothing for the fish. Keep feeding them normally until you leave, don't try to 'fatten them up' for the holdiay. Also do a water change before you need, as a precaution.

Spirulina flakes are an excellent supplement to regular flakes for livebearers. You can also give the occasional frozen brine shrimp or other small invertabrate, and, of course, fresh veggies.

Defrost a couple of peas in some warm water and peel off the skin, then put the two halfs in the water... they should gobble them up nicely.

Head on over to your LFS for live food, you can get bloodworms, and little shrimps there etc for them, which are a nice occasional treat.

[Edit: Missed out the pea part]

Your fish will definately be fine for 4 days.

I feed tubifex worms, and brine shrimp, as well as spirulina flakes as cichlidaddict mentioned.
