Hello,
I have mostly been keeping betta fish, but I have previous experience with one zebra danio which I rescued from a dying tank. She was very hardy and survived quite awhile. Anyway, I wanted a fish that could thrive in a 2.5 gallon, filtered tank without a heater. Since I knew danios were schooling fish, I thought it would be better to get 2 small ones. I have no interest in breeding. Anyway, long story short...I got one regular female (I am assuming by shape) and one orange (genetically altered) male. At first, the male was the more aggressive of the two and he would be the one chasing her off the food at the surface. Then something happened. One day, he must've gotten stuck between the filter and the back of the tank, because I simply could not find him. In desperation, I removed the filter and he floated out. He seemed stunned at first, but not really injured. Ever since that episode though, he has become quite timid about surfacing for food. The female is now very aggressive and easily chases him off. He goes back to the bottom and really doesn't appear to be getting any of the food. I hope that he is able to get enough or at least some of the food that sinks to the bottom. Do Danios feed off the bottom? This is my first experience having 2 danios, so I'm not sure what to do. She has gotten quite large and he seems to be getting thinner and weaker. Do you have any suggestions for how I could make the feeding more equitable? Thanks in advance.
