 Can I feed my baby guppies brine shrimp eggs before they hatch? I never really knew this...I bought a tube of thousands of shrimp eggs. Do I have to hatch them? Please let me know. 8)

have only ever tried the decapsulated ones on my babies (and they are too expensive to buy often) - apparently you can soak the eggs in some sort of ? acid to disolve the shells - I've got an article somewhere ????? about it - I'll have a hunt through my "stuff" - hopefully someone else knows what as it could take a while!!

I have several questions about those brine shrimp. 1.) Do you just throw them in your tank and let them grow? 2.) do you have to feed the little runts? Maybe that wasn't several but don't worry I didn't want to bring a burden onto you guys... :p

hi CG - found that article - please be warned - I HAVE NOT TRIED THIS - the article is by Toby Ann Kotner 18/11/97 and was taken off guppys.com site - it reads
'Put 3 - 4 tablespoons full of brine shrimp eggs in a straight sided glass jar and fill half full with regular Clorex bleach. Stir. (apparently it foams and gets hot) Spoon the foam out of the container (eggs will be a dark red by now) Add another 1/2 ounce of bleach and stir for a minute or so. Allow the eggs to settle and pour off the bleach. Fill the jar with water and allow the eggs to settle, pour off the water and rinse the eggs under running water till there is no smell of bleach. Drain them and freeze the eggs and just defrost what you need. If left fresh they fungus quickly. The article says they have been using the shrimp eggs for over 8 months with success.'
As I say haven't used this idea yet - was able to get a small supply of decapsulated brine shrimp which my babies went nuts over - can't get them any more so will try this sometime soon

Not to make you feel in any way inferior, but my 6 year old breeds brine shrimps (Sea Monkeys). ;)

You get the eggs, the salt additive (they are marine crustaceans) and add water. They usually hatch within 24 hours. Then every few days you put a tiny amount of spirulium powder in the water (or if you get green water you don't bother feeding them at all).

Keeping them warm makes them hatch and grow faster, which is why you can buy hatcheries that live inside your fresh-water tank (kind of like a tank within a tank). They can cope without an air-pump but I usually pop an oxygen tablet in their jar.
