I'm about 2 weeks out from finishing my cycle for my new fish only saltwater 55 gallon. My goal is to have a non-aggresive tank. I'd appreciate receiving advice concerning your favorite fish for this size tank and the number you feel is safe to keep.

Hi,
My favorite fish is the threadfin butterfly which can fit in your tank.

I agree, look through the liveaquaria beginner fish seciton and the only thing I would disagree with on thir minimum tank sizes would be not to get a tang for 55 gallons, unless you were going to give it away when it got big or something. Some of my favorites include true perculas, clarkii clowns, royal grammas, and yellow watchman gobies.

firefish, true percs or ocellaris, different kinds of gobies, dwarf angels like coral beauty. the list is endless. definitely look through online vendors to get an idea. liveaquaria.com, saltwaterfish.com, marinedepotlive.com are just a few.

Leapard wrasse. gorgeous fish and very peaceful. The Splendid Leapard Wrasse is even more stunning.

The Flame hawkfish is a great little fish. They can be spikey but not nasty. And some of the smaller Dottybacks. Sankeys, Orchid, Sunrise. Have great personality, but be careful which species you chose some can be just vicious  . IMO a fish with a LITTLE bit of a hooligan in its personality can be good.

Any tang is too big for 55 gallons unless you just want to have it through its childhood. Having a shoal will take away from the diversity that you can have in a 55 gallon as well.

Don't get a tang.

I'd look at flasher andfairy wrasses, relatively easy to keep and colorful.
