Just a quick question, but i have always liked fathead/rosey red minnows, however i have never seen them for sale in my lfs and have not noticed any members here living in england having them either. Are these fish actually sold in this country (England) at all?

I can't remember exactly, but I have a feeling they're included on the big list of 'coldwater things what you can't technically keep unless you've got a licence that we never issue anyway, but they occasionally turn up and shops and we don't do much about it if they do'. That's only a vague recollection though.

yes they are available, however the retailer must hold licence to sell them,
you don't need a licence to buy

Are they one those seasonal fish that are only sold are certain times of the year (like khuli loaches and hillstream loaches) or are they are an all-year-round sort of fish like guppys or convict cichlids etc? Does anyone know anywhere in or near somerset that may sell them? I really appreiciate any help you can give me, thanks for the info so far too :good: .

Thats a shame, they look like really cool friendly fish, and apparently they're very hardy and don't grow too large as well.

I have to admit, it's a little bizarre to me to see these guys as rare. Here in the US, we sell them as feeders. Part of my job at the LFS where I work is picking the dead ones out of the overcrowded feeder tanks in the morning.

Maybe if you contacted an American-based company such as Petsmart they'd be able to ship some to you?

that would be illegal, unless you have an import licence.

there is a reason these fish have restrictions here, it is because they can survive
our winters and if released into our eco system they can create problems where there were none.

It is a shame so many coldwater fish are not sold over here, it makes stocking options for coldwater tanks rather limited, "sigh" but i guess i understand that at the end of the day such measures are put in place for the good of our environment and native wildlife ecosystems.
