i was thinking of adding a farlowella to my tank what do i need for it, ive read that they need drift wood and horizontal plants with roots is this true?

they are an algae eating suckermouth catfish. They should get plant/ vegetable matter to graze on and if possible a bit of driftwood too. They will eat the wood if there isn't enough algae and other food.
Never heard of the horizontal plants and root. They normally just hang around on the glass or bits of wood. Sometimes you will see them sitting on the bottom. They don't do a lot but are nice and when you see them sitting in a bucket you can almost swear they look like a twig or thin bit of wood.
Males have little bristles on their nose, females don't.
Be careful if you have to use medications in their tank as they are sensitive the chemicals.

the roots were to help digestion...i don't know. i only have artificial plants but i can get drift wood. i haven't had luck with live plants...

None of mine ever ate plant roots but the only plants I had with exposed roots was Java Fern and that is pretty tough. If you have some algae on the glass, and offer them some fruit/ veges (pumpkin, zucchini, etc) each day, then that and the wood should be sufficient.

Good plants to try include Ambulia, Elodia, Hygrophilla polysperma, Swordplants & Narrow Vallis.
Have a light on the tank for about 12 hours a day. If you don't get much algae you can increase it a few hours. You can have the lights on for up to 16hours per day but the fish and plants need an 8 hour rest period.
You can also try adding some liquid plant food like Sera Florena and that will help.
