Hi

As some of you know i got my elite tank, filter and heater yesterday. I have the 50watt heater which is suitable for aquariums upto 50 litres.

Since 3pm yesterday iv had the heater on, and the light on it has stayed on, it was on when i went to sleep at 1am last night, i woke up 15 minutes ago and the light was not on? But the waters warm. Before anyone asks, no i havent taken it from the water whilst it is on - that shatters it.

I unplugged it and changed the temperature to a lower setting (to 26oC from 28oC) and the light came back on, i went downstairs for 10 minutes and come back up and the light has gone off again.

Is my heater faulty? Or is it just the fact that the light switches off when it reaches the correct temperature?

Iv only had it since yesterday  It came with no instructions really.

Edit: Turned the setting upto 28oC again and the light came on immediately, iv turned it back down to 26oC. Im assuming the light gos off when it reaches the desired temperature you have set. Can someone please confirm this, i dont want it being a dodgy heater.

Every heater I've ever had has a built in thermostat so that it shuts off when the water reaches a certain temperature and turns back on if the temperature drops. If it's going on and off by itself and you have a constant temperature reading, it's working.

So this is perfectly normal. The light has just turned off as i type. The heater in the tank downstairs doesnt have a light on, not sure if it did have when it was first turned on though.

Wont this on off stuff affect the fish? Reminds me to buy a thermometer lol!

No need to worry. Heaters are meant to do this. If they stayed on all the time then the water would be boiling.. they just come on when needed.
It won't affect the fish because it keeps a constant temperature.

Okay right thanks for that, i was panicing there. Guess i dont pay much attention to the one downstairs, because the light is turned on - hidden behind a sucker. So if my temperatures stay pretty much the same then its fine.

Thanks all :)

Oh whilst im at it, since my tank is the Elite brand, the lid is plastic as you probably guessed for a 10 gallon tank, so do i need condensation trays? I lifted the flap up on the lid and there was water over, i lifted the lid off completely and there was water over the light and lid itself.

Hi Maxta

I have the same tank as you. You do not need a condensation tray on the top as the lights are specially made to with stand the water

Hey there. Cool.

What fish do you have in if any and have you got any pictures i can look at? If you did a fishless cycle how much ammonia did you put in, im starting to understand the cycle now, but just unsure as to how much to put in?

Im at the start, had my tank a day now and all the bubbles have disappeared, the waters turning a tad darker but nothing to worry about.

Still have to find some ammonia, buy a tester kit and a thermometer.

Hi Maxta
The picture under my name is my tank. It has 5 black tailed Guppies,4 Layer tailed Guppies & 4 Dwarf Aquatic Frogs in it. I didn't have to cycle my tank, I used a filter pad from my main tank. I was hoping to change the layout & turn it into a Zen garden themed tank dont know yet.I do 50% water change every week. Works for me.
