Help! the guy's bubble nest keeps forming into one giant bubble even though the filter is off. hes circling the female like hes done with the nest, but hes far from it, its the smallest ive seen it. its +3 days now and the female is in pretty bad shape.

im kinda depressed that i spent so much on the almond leaves and the microworm cultures and i've failed mating them :(

should i just leave them for a couple of days? why in the WORLD is his nest getting messed up

Take the female out and give them a week to recover by feeding them live, frozen and freeze dried foods. After the week is up start again. But this time put a half of a styrofoam cup in a corner of the breeding tank. He will build his nest here. Hopefully the cup will protect the nest and all the tiny bubbles will be fine. Let them rest and try again! :)

one thing to consider is that even if the nest is meager doesn't mean hope is lost. if the timing is right they will still breed even if the nest is small, what will happen is the male will start vigourously blowing bubbles inbetween mating encounters and while putting eggs into nest and will concentrate on building it up even more after they have finished. using a half styrofoam cup is a great idea as it helps keep the bubbles together. breeding can be frustrating and if it doesn't work this time give them a break like ron said. ;) good luck.

One thing you should know/expect when going into breeding Bettas is it's not necessarily easy and you shouldn't expect success everytime. Don't get depressed or upset and your first attempt hasn't gone well, most new breeders go through the same thing (I did). Sometimes it just doesn't happen for whatever reason, the fish aren't ready or whatever. Just be sure to have them well conditioned (fed well with live or frozen food twice a day at least). Don't give up, just try to figure out if there is something else you could have done or not done (sometimes there is nothing you did or could do, it's just the fish). If the female isn't looking good then you probably want to remove them and let them rest and heal up, make sure your female is ok and healthy, re condition them and try again. If it still doesn't work then you may want to change one of them out with another. Good luck
