I have a Boyu hx-800 with integral hood filter. I don't think that the hood filter is any good (always debris in the water).

Are external filters much better than internal or hood types?

I was thinking of getting a Fluval 204 as all my LFS stock all the parts and filter media. Are they any good?

Cheers

Yep external filters are so much better than internal, you can stick what you like in the media baskets with in reason!!

I just got my Fluval 204 thorugh today and fitted it, was a bit trickle and frustrating as my tank has large side rims and with a background taped to the back the suction cups for the tube holders where a bit annoying!!!, anyways was a bit fiddly but working very nicely now.

This is my first external aswell so I can't really tell you that much!! Thats the tank look tidier though.

Thanks for that. Not sure how I will fit it to my tank as the hood covers the edges of the tank. Me thinks a bit of DIY maybe coming along. I may but one tommorow as my LFS seems to be doing a special offer as they are less than £60.

if you want it cheap like I did have alook at online places that can supply them cheaper, i used http://www.aquatics-warehouse.co.uk/ to get mine for £55 I think it was.

The fluvals have the clips with suction cups and they go on the side of the tank and grip onto the back then the hose runs aorund that or you can use the elbows which are a bit more versatile. on the inlet i just used elbows as the inlet tube gets held inplace on the inde by a suction cup, but on the outlet I used both to get it in the perfect position.

I had to snap the end part o the clamp off (which it shows in the diagram, but don't tell you that you have to  ) then clip the hose to that and use the elbows to point it in the right direction!!

If you want some help when you get it give me a shout and i'll send you some pics!!

Thanks paul_v_biker.

I bought one today, and it took me a couple of hours to fit. The problem is that the tank has an integral hood filter which sits about 3" above the tank so I had to modify this to get it to fit!

It all seems to be working now so I will see how it goes.
