External filters

Hiya,
Can someone give me some idea of which external filter is best in terms of quality vs price? I've got a heavily stocked, heavily planted 48" x 15" x 18". At the moment I've got a couple of internal filters in there, and they just aren't doing their jobs properly. Whatever it is it has to be easy maintenance.
Really don't know where to begin looking for these things, and time is against me for research.

I have a Filstar XP2 in my 55 gallon and it works like heaven. You can also add a hang-on-back filter but they usually provide less "methods" of filtration than a canister filter. I suggest you check out the other threads on this site to see what people think about all the different ways to keep your water clean!

I have a 240 litre tank and i am running an Eheim Professional II. this works like a dream and gives a good current with the spray bar. I also have a sump tank with all the extra filtration i.s UV, CO2 etc. this makes it great for maintanance. would recommend this!!

For "Hang On Back" filters, look at either Hagen AquaClears or Marineland Emperors. (in your tank's case, an AquaClear 500 or a Emperor 400).

For canisters, seems a lot of people like Eheims.

I have only ever had one type of external filter. I have 2 Eheim Eccos 2233 and they work brilliantly.

I think they are quite expensive though.

I used to have circle shaped cans eheim & mag. I have the square shapped (wet dry actually) eheim now.. I'll never go back. The three mags Ive gone through would have easly paid for the 2229 Im running now. Save up and do it right the first time

I think the Fluval canisters are (04 range) good value for money (its what I use)

Its quiet and reliable

I never had a Eheim because of the cost factor really but people rate them even higher than the 04 range, ppl say they are silent

So if you have the money I would get a Eheim canister, if your looking for value for money a Fluval 04 range will do, does fine for me!!!
