I bought the 1400 for my rescued oscar as he only had an internal and I was so happy with it, I upgraded all my larger tanks to APS externals. The oscar has one of the larger ones for his new tank now

They are (especially the 2000lph ones)
huge; loads of space for media; you might want to order an additional media package, as they don't come with very much.
I found mine very easy to set up; it was my first external as well and it took me about an hour; but that's including sitting reading the instructions with a cup of coffee and searching for the craft knife to cut the hoses!
There are a few, very minor issues with them. They can take a while to prime and they can get a bit of air trapped in them, but if you're patient and gentle, it's
no problem to get them going again. Just take your time and don't get stressed out!
The handles on the media baskets are pretty flimsy, so be careful of those.
And you
must fit the UV light cover, if it comes with one, even if you're not going to be using it, as it'll leak if you don't!
Apart from those things they're a very, very good filter and considering the price, you can't go wrong, IMHO
