I am thinking about getting an external filter for my 25g tank. I am looking at going for a 40g range one but not sure what the best size or kind really would be any suggestions would be very helpful thanks.

Fluval 305. Eheim 2226, Aqua One Aquis 1050?

The bigger the better really (so you don't have to change filter if you upgrade).

If budget allows, look at the Fluval FX5 :good:

A good choice indeed hun :good:

Very easy to work with.

They are an ideal upgrade from a Fluval + internal because you can slide the mature pads straight in to the grid. You get four slots for foam pad media :D

You will also have three media trays and I would suggest bio balls in the bottom one, noodles in the middle one and polishing floss in the top one :good:

Don't forget to prime it with the plunger before switching it on ;)

I have found that when you clean the canisters, you won't normally need to re-prime. If you shut off the hoses and remove them from the powerhead before changing any water, as long as the water level doesn't drop below the inlet strainer during the change, when you re-fit the hoses and open the taps, it will syphon itself because the vacuum is still inside the hoses. You will need to top up the tank again afterwards though :good:

Thanks for the tips smeg when the filter arrives i may be back asking more questions

When my filter arrives i would like to get it up and running right away. Since i already have fish in this tank and a hob filter running. What are some suggestions to get my new filter running and working properly the fastest

Replace half of your HOB media with new and put the old into the baskets of the Fluval. Run the two filters side by side for 10-12 weeks, adding another piece of media from the HOB to the Fluval baskets every couple of weeks :good:

my fluval 305 just showed up today and would like a little help or suggestions. i am going to be setting it up tonight when i get home from work. my idea is as follows set it up and leave my two other hang on the back filters going at the same time now should i take some of the media out of the hang on the back filters and put it in the fluval or not

I would not if you are ruining them all side by side for a month or two. Fill up the fluval with fresh media such as biomax if it has any empty trays and maybe some filter floss to polish

Ty big what i ended up doing is not putting any filter media from the other filters in it and they are all three running now in the same tank. when i bought it i also bought some pads. not exactly knowing what i would need or to be honest what they were. so i took the carbon out and had one completely empty tray plus a half empty tray. so i cut up the filter pads to fit in the empty slots that is the best i could do. there is one tray full of biomax and one slot in another tray with biomax in it i hope this will all do thanks for the help.
