I am thinking about upgrading my filtration from internal to external but i am unsure about which filter to choose.

I was thinking either fluval or ehiem?

I'm not looking to spend over £50.

I'm looking for something quiet reliable and efficient.

Any suggestions will be greatly appriciated :)

I use Eheim myself but there isn't much difference, depending on your size of tank and type of fish £50 may not get you a great one though. If you have a smallish tank or just small community fish you would be fine but if you were keeping anything larger or predatory I would get the largest one I could afford and I would also consider a thermo-filter model if you do have big or boisterous fish to avoid burns or breakages.

Owned an Ehiem Classic (many years ago - it was great), followed by a Fluval (now sold - it was OK but it was not an Eheim), currently using an Eheim Pro Thermo (what a joy to own). I've also on my second Eheim internal (bought it today & eagerly anticipating get it running tomorrow).

Eheim is definately the way to go in my opinion - in order of budget (low to high): Classic, Ecco, Pro, Pro II. I'd have a Classic over a Fluval any day of the week. Fluval's do the job, they're just not in the same class as an Eheim.

The result of a really quick in to eBay...

Thanks for your replys :)

This filter would be for a community aquarium - containing harlequins, black widows tetras etc so no real 'messy' fish.

I have heard good things about both filters. Just one thing i can't understand - the fluval 105 is for use up to 100 litres but the eheim (with a similar output) is for use up to 250lts?

HAve a look at the Eheim Ecco series. they are really reasonably priced and do some decent filtration.

Ok, so after a bit of research i have decided to go for eheim. But i'm now unsure which model to go for.

Either the classic series or the ecco series?

the main point id say is,get a filter thats filters twice the amount of water in your tank.i have a jewel rio 240 tank and have kept the original internal filter running as well as an eheim pro 11 2028 external filter.my tank only contains tetras, cardinals etc but when i want to change my fish(which i often do)my filtration will be up to the job.ive kept malawis, senegals, shovelnose etc etc in my tank with no probs at all.if your going to keep the same fish forever, then,by all means get the right filter for you, but,id always get a larger filter than you need incase you change your fish for something bigger.

Good point :)

It would be worth paying a bit more for a more powerfull filter now rather than having to upgrade if i change my stocking.
