External filter question

I have an eheim 2026 pr02.

When i turn the filter on after cleaning etc this whiteish stuff comes out in small clumps and goes everywhere and makes the water look dirty until it all gets collected by the filter. Where is it all coming from?

I try to scoop some of the big bits out using my net but the water still goes all cloudy from this white stuff after turning the filter back on.

Any ideas? or it just normal?

No idea what it is but my Eheims do the same thing (and have done for years). It soon disappears!

Hi nitro

You may find that the stuff is actualy coming from the pipework. There is always a buildup.

I have the same problem - it gets worst if you not clean the pipes out.

How would you go about cleaning the pipes?

the pipe ends which are connected to the filter will not come off

I have exactly the same with my eheims. You can buy a little cleaning brush thing for the hoses - it's like 6 feet of stiff nylon wire with a little brush on one end - just thread it through the hoses and scrub 'em out. the ones attached to the filter should come out, even it you have to take the inlet assembly off - just clean out the whole thing and run some water though the hose.

Or when you first turn on the filter again after cleaning it let it discharge a couple of liters into a jug or something, then place the exit hose back in the tank.

I know it's really disheartening when you've spent ages cleaning the tank and doing a water change then all this white gunk comes spewing out and messes your tank up again! Been there

I use a lenght of heavy fishing linewith a small loop tied to the end. put a small piece of kitchen roll in the loop and pull it through a few times.

Removing the hoses and jetting them through with mains pressure into the sink or bath works equally well.

What is the stuff though? is it some sort of bacteria buildup or literaly just sludge, and why is it white, just curious, i clean it out as well but always wondered what it was.

I've noticed it with my Eheims, I think it is from the petroleum jelly-like stuff they give you for the seals. When I take mine apart it is on the seals, I guess it's some sort of petroleum/water emulsion. I don't worry about it.
