I use Eheim 2026 and 2028's but the question can apply to other externals, you can just ignore the "eheim" brand part

What's the most effective/efficient mechanical media

If you vote "other" please state what it is.

Also has anyone used option 2, i have it, what do people think of it?

Also, any other comments, tips, advice welcome

Here are some links to the choices

I dont think many peeps know about the Eheim Ehfi Fix or use it and you have to hunt it down a bit on Google, but i ordered some a while back and when i opened it, i thought "what the heck is this", its kind of like really coarse green plastic string.

I completely filled the bottom eheim tray on some of my 2028's a while back, whenever i went into the filter (about every 10-12 weeks), this stuff still "looked" clean, so i wondered if it was actually doing anything.

But tonight, i actually took it out and rinsed it in tap water in a small bucket to see what came out, and the water was almost black!!

Well it's Eheim after all, they know what they are doing, i am going to stick with this stuff at the bottom of my filters, it seems to catch much more cr*p than other mechanical media i have used.

IN my 2217 I have both Eheim Ehfimech then a course sponge (not string) that looks like Ehfifix but blue, and acts like a divider between the Ehfimech and Eheimsubstrat pro. That’s just what came with the filter so I'm useing it.

As far as working to get debris out? It could be better. I have small particles floating around but I just added some more floss type filter in so hopefully that will help. I think that there is only so much my fitter can do to keep up the digging fish with a sand substrate.

I used efi fix in my canisters (and still do in the eheim running on my brackish tank) and i have no complaints about it, seems to do its job and it lasts forever.
