External Filter For A 60 Litre Tank?

Would running an external filter on a 60 litre tank be ok or would it be overkill?

It'd be fine, I'd recommend a Tetratex ex600, it would be perfect, giving you a theoretical turn over of 10x the tank volume per hour.

Alternatively i run a Fluval 205 on my 60L planted tank and it doesnt appear over powerfull, yet gives good circulation and my Gourami's are always building bubble nests readily

A 2213 (eheim) will do the trick.

Second the 205 filter. Very good indeed for this kind of sized tank. The flow is very gentle and will provide more than enough filtration.
