I am having a custom tank(freshwater, planted 140 x50x60) built by aquariums ltd. I have specified 4 holes drilled in bottom of tank so that 2 external filters can have inlet and outlet plumbed directly through the bottom of the tank, with no external tubing ( have reasons for this due to position of tank).
Some Fluval (Vicenza and Profile) tanks have this arrangement. So I believe it is feasible. However my searches suggest this is a very unusual arrangement, and some even suggest that drilled holes with bulkhead connectors (no weir) pose a risk to the glass bottom. It would seem very few, if any people have this, presumably because most tanks are not drilled.
So I would be really grateful if anyone had any comments on the pros/cons, feasibility, suitability or practicality of this proposed setup. Is this a really bad idea, or is it reasonable?
The order is progressing and the manufacturers need the drilled hole sizes in the next few days. So would be grateful for your views.
Thanks
Matthew
