Hi All,

I am in the process of removing my internal Juwel filter to replace it with an External Fluval 305. The external filter was finally installed yesterday and the Juwel pump has been turned off to be replaced by the external pump.

However, I have left the internal filter media in - the theory being that the external media will take a time to mature. The first question is

How long would you recommend leaving the sponges in? (The tank is fully matured)

Secondly, Im interested in adding peat to the filter trays because I have very hard water which limits my stocking somewhat.

Does the peat have a noticeable or dramatic effect on water hardness (I have no experience of this?). I have six 'compartments' in the filter, if I were to change one of the carbon compartments to a peat compartment, how would this help?

Im sorry I dont have a hardness reaading to hand, but the best description is 'Very Hard'

Thank you for your time.

m8 you have to keep the juwel pump running if you want the bacteria to stay alive , with no pump running theres no way the bacteria will get what they need to stay alive with no water flow..

when i put my external on my vision 180 i kept the juwel running and removed 1 pad a week at water changes , all went smoothly and didn't get any hint of ammonia or nitrite :D.

If you wanted to remove the juwel filter straight away you could always move the juwel filter pads to the external and remove 1 a week , what ever way you do it its going to take a few weeks before you can run the external on its own with its right filter media ..

Excellant - I think the 1 pad a week is an excellant suggestion.

However, are you saying that the pump in the external filter is insufficient to circulate the water properly, because I fear with both running the tank may become a bit of a washing machine for the fish.

the external will be able to circulate the water around the tank fine but there's no way there will enough circulation through the juwel filter, just point the outlet on the juewl pump towards the back of the tank that should slow it down a bit.

if the juwel pump has been off for a 1 or 2 days i would think a lot of the bacteria will have died , hope not though .

your post has 33 views , i'm surprised no one else has taken the time to help you out ...
