hi everyone,

Ok I've had my 5.5 g running for about 2 weeks now and I had one betta in it. I had it split with plastic canvas and I don't know if that caused this like see through white build up on the plants and even on the surface of the water. I didn't have the filter running very much and I am going to change the water a bit today but does anyone know what this stuff is? I'm hoping it will go away now that the filter has been running for a few hour. It might just be because of the heater. Any ideas?

Hmm.. sometimes globs of transparent goo with appear if you have live plants. I believe it's decayed plant matter. This has been my experience anyway.

Also, sometimes an oily, colorless residue will appear on the surface of the water. It really isn't transparent goo, just a film. If I remember correctly, this occurs when a certain chemical is released by the betta. This film is natural and totally harmless.

Hope that helps in any way :/

thanks for the quick response. I have no idea what it is but actually I don't have any live plants, first I thought it was the plastic canvas but I took that out a few days ago and it seems there is more now. I'm going to try to get rid of it, it looks kind of yucky. The fish are all fine and happy. Thanks though

i have a oily film that shows up when I used that hbh betta food from pet smart, I quit using that crap and went to betta bio gold, and the film went away also. It could be the food.

ohh that might be it. I used pellets from nutrafin, it's max complete pellet food. so far it never made a mess but maybe it is that, otherwise I just feed freeze dried bloodworms which haven't made a mess in my small tanks either. Thanks though, I'll keep that in consideration:)
