Hello!
about 10 days ago my apisto' cacatuoides spawned for the first time (my first ever spawning!) I have about 3-4 of them alive but don't really have anything I can feed them, anyway about 15mins ago I noticed my rummy nosed tetras going crazy and the thinner ones chasing the fatter ones over to the plants and then squeezing her body letting a load of eggs fly all over the place!!

I'm totally not prepared for this though!

I dont have infusoria and my 15L tank is mid-cycle! I don't expect any of the eggs to survive (I hope my baby apistos do though!!)

What should I buy/get for next time so I can try and raise some myself?

Thanks! Any tips appreciated!

You really need a larger than 15l tank for breeding fish. Fry look tiny, but they need a lot of water if they're to grow properly and not become stunted.

As far as food goes; I've never had any luck culturing infusoia! I now keep some decapsulated brine shrimp eggs (in the fridge) that work great; they're very fine and don't need hatching out. They're perfect to have on hand for unexpected fry :good: After that you can move them onto hatched out baby brine shrimp or you can keep a culture of something like microworms going if you're serious about breeding :)

Well I also have a 60L tank which 6 Galaxy rasbora and a single honey gourami, 2ADFs and a few Kuhlis in it so I could move them into there if they get big enough?
As for the food, food needing a fridge is a bit of a no-go for me unfortunately, I do however use frozen food I know apisto' cacatuoides are said to be good parents (mine are first timers and she still guards the cave etc a week on!) will they help feed the fry or not?

I only keep mine in the fridge to try and keep as many vitamins in it as possible; it doesn't need to be; it keeps perfectly well sealed in a poly bag :)

Your Apistogrammas will help feeding the fry; I'd leave them where they are and let mum look after them. Do your regular water changes (do extra ones if you can) but don't hoover the gravel too much so there's plenty of mulm for them to root about in :) You could try grinding up some frozen food really small once they're out and about (if they make it that far; if they don't; well, there's always next time :good: )

Hmm, well I'm not overly fussed about raising the rummy-noses I just thought I would need to do something with the apisto ones too! I think I'll just leave them if the apisto ones will be able to survive without any special attention (eventually anyway maybe not the first batch :) ) as cost is also bit of an issue! (university student :( )

Thanks!

I can heartily recommend ZM foods (they do fry and adult foods). I use the infusoria grade for my Celebes when they are tiny and work up to the larger sizes plus new hatched brine shrimp. I believe they ship international if you aren't in the UK.
