A few minutes ago I looked into my tank. Recently my filter broke so have been using a sponge filter (increases aeration :)) So now I had a lot of plugs lying around. Looking at the temperature, after noticing lethargy in my tetras, I saw it was at 20C! Quickly, a put the heater in, and saw an orange light of hope (lol). Scanning the tank for any problems, I saw some small eggs on the glass!!!!!!!!! My first cory spawn! About 15 are now in a luch box (4" x 3") floating in the top of the tank with a piece of airline tubing providing bubbles. What should I do now?

Hopefully a proud daddy,

Jonty.

Aw congrats on your first eggs! What you have done sounds good (though I am first time cory mum ;))do get the temps up and hope all the fish are ok :good:

Thanks - more problems though! The heater seems knackered - so I have a 25w in a 60l - hopefully go to LFS later :0

Hi Jonty, well done on the eggs :good: they should hatch in about 3 days, try and keep the water clean they are in to prevent any fungus attacking the eggs but try not to let them get exposed to air. put the airpump on full whack to keep them moving about if poss and when/if they hatch turn it down a bit as the fast air can kill the fry as they will be very fragile. if you get any fur on ant eggs its best to remove them so they dont contaminate the others. apart from that fingers crossed and good luck with them :good:
when they have hatched daily water changes are required so they dont get any bacterial infections etc also use a bit of sand in the bottom of the tub to stop bacteria build on on there too, they will survive on the egg sack for a day or 2 but i always put firstbites in to feed at the end of day 1, any thats left will be removed with the water changes.

Thanks for the reply - the eggs are moving about a lot due to the pump :)

As for first foods - could I crush up flakes or algae tablets? I also have frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp, and freeze-dried tubifex worm and brine shrimp

I have temporarily a 25w heater on the same tank but it is in a pretty warm room just keep an eye on it and get a new heater :good: The eggs moving about shouldnt bother them too much (well at least with my hatchee experience ;)) First foods they need teeney tiny foods, I would order some liquifry or first bites (only couple of quid each, can get off Ebay) some peeps prefer first bites as liquifry can mess with your stats from what I have heard. I also got off Ebay bloodworm powder etc and comparing to the first bites it is noticeably slightly larger so first bites is the best ground around. Though then again saying that looking at the cories you have the fry should be bigger, have you a pestle and mortar? (I say that as have pygmy fry that needed the smallest ever!)

EDIT: Hope you are excited proud dad!!

A useful piece of advice I was given for raising fry was to feed them on squeezings from a filter in the arly stages. Worked for me for my first few batches but I seemed to lose the touch on the last couple (see thread on problems raising cory sterbai fry). Using a mixture of squeezings, frozen cyclops and powdered food for baby fish for the current batch and looking good so far.

Luckily the heater is working now!

So, unless I'm very much mistaken, the eggs hatch in 3 days and they have 1-2 days on a yolk sack. I'll order some first bites now, and if they're late, I'll use filter squeezings. Thanks everyone!

i would put the filter sqeezings in on the end of the first day just incase you get some early hatchers this way the first to hatch will have something to nibble on. then use firstbites 2x a day and do about 20-30% water changes daily and vac the sand to remove any uneaten food etc. frozen bloodworms etc will be way too big for your new fry but you can get frozen baby brine shrimp which will be ok just put then in some tank water to defrost then add them to the tank. you can use crushed flake, pellets, wafers as they get a bit bigger say 4 weks old by this time they will look like little corys and be a lot bigger. also there are live foods such as micro worms, brine shrimp, etc buy a kit off ebay and get an endless suppl of micro worms for about £4.

2 have hatched so far! They're so tiny!
