I have these two little juvie boys with what I thought were swimbladder problems. Both have trouble staying down and float at the top all the time, sometimes on their sides or sometimes upright, depending on how bad it is that day. Both look like their tummies are constantly bloated, no matter how much I fast them and give them peas.

Well today I was doing water changes and the weirdest/funniest thing happened. I put one of them in a cup while changing his water, and I saw him pass three large air bubbles out of his vent!
His tummy looked somewhat less swollen afterwards, and he was immediately able to swim much better. As comical as this is, surely it's not normal? I have never seen a fish fart before today!
I guess maybe something's wrong with the digestive systems of these two boys... either they're producing excess gas as they digest, or it's leaking in from their swimbladders or something. This would help explain why it's their tummies that are bloated rather than their swimbladders, and why they can swim better some days than others as digesting food pushes the excess air out. :dunno:

This is all just so weird, haha.

You mean a bubble came out of a gill? I've had one do that before..I thought the fish was dying. He didn't though (well not from that :/ )

No, I think Synirr said the bubble came out of the vent, according to the post. Wow, fish farting, that must be a sight!

At least you can't smell anything Synirr. Though, I'd start to be worried if all of your fish decide to fart at once! Especially if they've been eating peas!

oh, by vent I'm assuming you are talking about the urogenital opening...I've never heard it called a vent lol.

Haha, well I bet he feels relieved now!

My fish pass gas too. I've never seen my bettas do it, but my loaches and a few other fish do it all the time.

 Ahahaha Ahhhh dunno whether to be worried for him or laugh. Never seen any of my many fish fart thankfully but I guess even they must suffer sometimes, just like we do. Does sound like they have a problem tho, to suffer all the time like that.
Hugs,
P.

I'm assuming it was swallowed as well, but I have seen fry that have a hard time swimming and you can clearly see an air bubble inside them, but this is before they start drawing air from the surface and since it's always gone away maybe it's from some food source...?

On that note, I've seen my frontosa fart, but it's rare and far between. Never saw a betta do it

Yeah, that vent . Also known as the cloaca. That term for it is why the process of sexing larger, hard to sex fish is called "venting", because you essentially have to turn them upside down and check under the hood :p

The theory of them gulping air and having it go down the wrong way sounds about right, they both started having problems at about the same time their labyrinths were forming. Now that I've taken the time to really examine them with a flashlight I can clearly see gas bubbles in their tummies. Aside from being constantly off-balance it doesn't seem to be having any ill effects on their health :dunno:

Hey Synirr do you think this could be what is wrong with my little lady??I thought she was egg bound but I couldnt see that happening and her being so young. The male bettas are ready they have some huge bubble nests going..

Lol, i've seen liittle bubbles coming up to the surface so the corys are farting, lovely.

Is she having trouble staying balanced in the water? If not, then no. If so, then I guess it's possible, but it seems unlikely she'd develop the problem so late :/
