Fish Fanatic
Ah well time to get up on my soapbox for a while and ramble.
My Rainbow shark died the other day (jumped out, and I didn't find it until later...that sucked) so I went to go to the LFS (actually it's an hour away, so not very local) anyways... I took my parents along cause they seemed bored and maybe they might find something for their 10 gallon community. So we get there and do some looking around and they have a Rainbow shark that was massive! My old one was about 2 inches and this one I think it pretty darn near full grown, awesome looking fish. So I asked if it was for sale (usually at the store I see a lot of big fish that are only for display) so the girl says it was and I asked how much and she said "umm, it's the same price as the small ones" and that would be just under 8 bucks (cdn, hey I thought it was a sweet deal) so before anyone else could take it (lots of people were asking about it) I had her bag it up for me.
So anyways... (still reading? good) I also spotted a raphael catfish for 1/2 price, and they had one left... never really knew aything about this type of fish but always wanted one so up that one went into a bag. Still more browsing around I came accross some Kuhli loaches at last!!! finally in-stock, so after 15 minutes of fishing around the girl finally got them into a bag (I didn't mind the wait... she was nice eye candy) So I paid for the fish and took them out to my car.
Now for the interesting part I went back in to see what my parents were doing and they were looking at some catfish, no problem I thought it was a good idea to give them some bottom cleaning as they tend to overfeed, so they bought 5 albino catfish. Now my test kit ran out about a week ago so I brought a sample of my water for them to test, and grabbed a sample of the 10 gal to for the heck of it (free testing so why not) So this guy tests the water and brings them back with a concerned look on his face, hands the containers back and tells us that the 10 gal is fine... the PH is a little high (7.2ish last time I checked...high huh?) but everything else looked ok. Then he tells me that the 55 gal (mine) is in very bad shape. he said the ammonia is way too high, and the nitrite levels, ph, etc... were all too high and I shouldn't buy any more fish and clear this up ASAP. I look at him kinda weird and said OK (I was skeptical because it was fine last time I checked)
So I leave and head back home after picking up another test kit, to double check. I get home float my fish and while i'm waiting I test my water. Ammonia was almost none existant, as well as everything else. PH was a 7.4 7.6 (who can tell the colors anyways. Yeah I thought it was a 'little' high was as long as it was stable I didn't care, and the fish seemed happy as always.
So anyways I got frustrated and can't believe that guy told me that, and now my parents think I'm some kind of weirdo because I always mock their tank for how bad it looks and how good mine is (lets not go there) and to top it off my parents think you don't need to change the water more than 1-2 a YEAR and that it's ok for the water to look green-brown all the time, gravel vacs are just a waste of money... But I guess it's ok because I work on their tank more than I do mine, in fact I spend more time at their house cleaning it! And when I left their catfish seemed to be happy and I cleaned the tank so it's nice and clear... for now. *Sigh*
Wow thats a lot of rambling... I don't expect anyone to read all that, but it sure made me feel better. I'm missing more 'good' stuff but oh well.
Man, some days I just wanna
