i have a molly who has a spinal deformity and has got weaker and weaker...to the point where i think it would be kinder to put her out of her misery. However, my fishy books say to cut their heads off or hit them on the head with a hammer etc. i can't bring myself to do that.... do you guys know anything else?

Sarah :(

Hi sarah
sorry to hear of this :-(
The only humane way IMO is the clove oil method

Buy pure clove oil. You can get it at a health food store. Put the fish in a medium sized mixing bowl in his own water from his tank. In a small jar or something with a lid mix the clove oil with tank water. Put the lid on and shake it like crazy over and over until the liquid in it is white. Then pour a little into the mixing bowl with the fish. Swirl it with your hand. The fish might fight it just a little bit and then slow down. Then pour a little more in and swirl again. He should just go to sleep and appear dead. If he doesn't, try a little more of the clove solution, always shaking very well before an addition to the bowl. When he goes to sleep, leave him in the solution for a good 20 minutes. Pain free death. Very humane. We should all go so easily.

if you can't get hold of clove oil, try phoning a vet.
they may have - and will certainly be able to get hold of - a fish anaesthetic which can be used in a similar way to the clove oil for euthanasia

I'm so sorry to hear that Sarah.

Goodnight fishy. :rip:

(Thanks Danio for very good humane advice which should be pinned in case the rest of us ever need it)

I read on one of these posts to use Ice cubes. Put them in a little bowl of water and put in Ice cubes for 20 minutes.

euthanasia by cold shock (also done by putting fish in the freezer) is IMO cruel
and certainly must be unpleasant for the fish.

anaesthetic overdose is probably the nicest way, followed by blunt trauma to the head which causes instant unconciousness, although you must be quite forceful.

I was just repeating what I read on one of the posts here. I've never had to do it. Sorry I offended you.

I catch the fish in a net and hold the fish through the net then i give it a really hard flick in the head, I know it sounds horrible but the fish dies instantly without going through any stress, Thank god iv only had to do it a few times.
The whole process takes a few seconds from the time its caught in the net.

I wasn't being offended, I was just trying to inform people who were reading this topic that it is not a particularly nice way to pts a fish.

Hi Sarah,

You can get clove oil from any chemist (Boots) about £1 for a small bottle (50ml) - you only need a little.... :(

www :)

Thanks guys, she has now painlessly departed. Also lost a puffer on the same day :-( But all my other little fish buddies seem to be doing okay. Thanks for all your support and advice.

Sarah

I was unfortunate enough to have to use the clove oil method recently (see thread in here somewhere). It really did work a treat. A painless quick way for a loved pet to go :(
