Hi There,

I have a new crab in my 29l tropical tank ... a few days ago he escaped and I found him today (was so happy that he is still alive) He's back in aftera good clean down in seperate treated water. Any ideas on how to hinder his escape attempts ? I've moved the heater away from the cornerand I've got glass lids, but they have space for the filters, lights, water heaters etc

Any ideas ?

the only way is to totally seal the lid of the tank, no gaps of any kind!!!!!!

Try buying some sponges and then cutting them a little larger than the hole, then squeeze them in there and as they expand your hole is gone but they cords are still let through.

Good idea Poopsydrew. Also are you sure the crab you have doesn't need access to any land? Not sure what kind you have but that may have been why he escaped.

I would love to take credit but it wasnt my idea, I have seen someone suggest it on this site before  But yes I love how innovative the people on this site can be.

good comment :good: there are no "aquatic" crabs that i can find for the hobby. indeed, only deep sea crabs seem to be so!

the Hobby crabs need land, and most need Brackish water too!

you don't have to seal it complete. Just put a pew pieces of wood over the open areas and put a rock on top of them. I had the same issue with my apple snail. Sniff poor guy didn't make it very long after. He was out of the tank for 4 days.

You might be surprised just how much force a crab can exert. i have seen them push wire mesh away from a tank and escape. just a bit stronger than a snail :hyper:
