Can you all keep your fingers crossed for our youngest cat Errol who is fighting for his life at the emergency vets as we speak. Errol has a history of kidney problems following a nasty electric shock he got as a young kitten before he came to us. Tonight he collapsed and he's currently being worked on miles away at the emergency vets. There's nothing we can do but keep everything crossed. :-(

oh no... i'm so sorry about this. i hope he feels much better very soon. and hopefully, everything will go as smooth and painlessly as possible. my best wishes are with you and him. <3 :-(

Morning all. Thanks for the messages you lot. I have to ring the vets at 10am to see if he's okay - I rang a couple of times in the small hours and was given then don't call us we'll call you routine, so we'll see. They did say they'd ring if there was any news. Last I heard he was giving the team some grief (unlike him but a good sign none the less) and had had to have the catheter put back in. So he's fighting. Wish us luck!

I've just spoken to the actual vet. He has had to be re-catheterised and flushed through again as he is at the moment not able to wee without the catheter. The next 24 to 48 hours will tell whether he'll be able to wee normally, and hopefully we'll find out the extent of his kidney damage, which is as yet unknown. Unfortunately it's not a good sign that he's this young and has already had two near death blockages. Still feel this is linked to his electric shock as a kitten, but it's all a grey area.

I asked whether I should get hold of the prescription diet he had last time and she said that the most important thing was that he got wet food. I'm not sure that I'd feel safe having him on just normal food having seen other cats still get this problem on wet "commercial" food. I think I'd be happier with him on the prescription, but I assume that vet doesn't sell it or she'd have been peddling it. Going to get a 2nd opinion off my usual vet on Monday.

Still no idea what long term effects this will have, or if they're going to have to operate. Thanks for all your kind messages!

Oh no, I hope he pulls through :/ Best Wishes to you and Errol

Well, I'm completely shocked. He's coming home! :yahoo: But I'm a bit errr and a bit ooo about it too. Seems quite soon. But anyway, we're off to pick him up, and thank you for the lovely messages.

thats fantastic! he must be doing really well! i got really excited when i had to pick my dog up from the vets after he'd been staying there for the day, they went to go and get him and his little face appeared in the doorway  and he was so happy to see us again. I hope Errol carries on to make a full recovery if he hasnt already done so. :)

picking animals up from the vet or kennel is the best. they always seem to think you aren't coming back, poor things. i'm sure he'll be happy to go home.

Thanks all of you :good:

Well we're home (finally!). Errol is off his little head on painkillers - very stoned indeed. He has to go back tomorrow for a checkup.

He has to go back on prescription food permanently, but until we get a sample we don't know which one, so he's on "normal" wet food for now (God knows which one - I'm petrified I'll get that wrong). He was on SD then CD last time (both dry) and also had a Waltham diet when they couldn't get hold of CD, but it turns out his crystals weren't tested last time and that diet was prescribed on guess work. So I have to get a sample somehow!

Tomorrow I get to discuss long term implications with a vet - it might be that they take blood to test his renal function, but they may leave this unless he develops symptoms. Chances are he has lost some more of his kidney function. It's also likely that they'll recommend a urethrostomy, but at least I get to discuss that with them tomorrow.

Thanks for all the messages!

Slightly less stoned now:
