Ok here goes... I've got a Fluval 3 internal filter (NOT the Plus one, the original) in my 20 gallon tank. I had always thought it was plenty of filtration, but at only 6 watts, I'm not sure how many GPH it does, but I don't think it is really big enough to add any more fish. So, I was thinking of maybe transferring this filter to my other ten gallon tank, and getting a canister filter.

Any ideas what sort of canister filter would do? I need a cheap second hand one for a 20 gallon aquarium - so that is 200GPH right?

Thanks.

I'm always at lost when it comes to filter and the amount of water that the pumps need to pump.

If your ammonia is 0ppm it means your filter is good enough.. a little over filter is good but in the end there will be the same amount of bacteria no matter how big the filter is, its just that a bigger filter can house more bacteria when needed.

so if you do get a ammonia reading you might need to save a little on the feeding or increase the filter..

If you feel you want more filtration the Eheim Ecco or Eheim 2213 would probally work if you want an external. If you want an HOB I would go for a Emperor 280.

Hang-on-back. You know, the external power filters that hang on the back of the tank. I agree, an Emperor 280 would be great but I don't know if they sell them in the UK. You can always get one mail order (they're much cheaper anyway). You can't go wrong with an AquaClear either.
