In my 10-gallon Nano, I've only got one PH for circulation. It's rated for 25 gallons, but is that enough? And the suction cups that came with my heater won't stick! They stick initially, but then they eventually come off, usually within a couple of hours. I clean the glass, clean the suction cups, and press them on tight, but they always come off, why is this?

What flow rate does the powerhead provide, also what have you got in your tank.

Try getting new suction cups- I find saltwater degrades rubber over time.

It provides a flow rate from 47-80 gallons per hour, I have it set to 80 GPH. Is that good? Right now, the only thing I have in my tank is water (already mixed), aragonite sand, a heater, a powerhead and a thermometer. I would get new ones, but I'm not sure if thats the problem, because I got the heater brand new the day before I mixed the water. Also, does a hydrometer that floats, and has a S.G. gauge (?) on a small tube that protrudes out of the water give a reliable reading?

Alot of people feel you need a minimum of 10x's the volume as the flow rate i.e. a 10 gallon aquarium needs a minimum of 100gph in flow. Most people try for more, I think I'm up just over 10x's.

IMO that is not enough circulation. I am aiming for three 150GPH powerheads in my 20 gallon. You need the flow to give lots of circulation to the live rock and make it an efficient filter. 10-15x the volume of your tank is a good start, so you need at least 200GPH of flow.

Get a maxi-jet 600 and that should be fine. Maxi-jets are the most reliable and powerful pumps I have come across. They do not overheat, jam or rattle, even when taken out of the water.

Hope this helps,

Sam.

Actually, only 100-150 GPH, its only a 10 gallon. I might aim for higher though. I'll try to find Maxi-jets, I'm not sure if they have them in Canada.

I met somebody today that runs 900 gph on a 30 gallon.... 3 x 300!!!!!

Is this overkill?

30x tank capacity?

   :kana:

Loads of flow!

When you dive on a reef and find that the marine surge is so strong that you cant swim against it then you will get an idea that we simply cannot recreate this power in our tanks.
