How do you tell Endler's apart? I bought 8 recently and the guy told me he gave me a couple pairs, but I'd like to make sure, so how exactly do you tell the sexes on Endlers??

Are you sure the first is a female Endler Guppy?? It doesn't look like one. I read not to mix endlers with common or even fancy guppies. I'm confused, are you 100%?? It looks like a common feeder guppy female to me.

Endlers are not the same as Guppies. Calling it an Endler Guppy might be what is causing some confusion. Endlers can cross with Guppies. That picture is correct. Crosses of females will look like that often times.

im not a 100% sure because i got the pic of google to show you

but iv got black bar endlers and my females look the same as the pic
they are very simular to a guppie female
the way to tell if they are guppies or endlers is iv been told is the anul fin on a female endler is more triangler than a guppie

but u never know if ure getting 100% pure strain endlers anyway unless you know for certain the suppler is trustworthy

My Endlers seem to be pure, I'll check the tails in a bit, hopfuly the guy did give me some pairs, I wasn't really paying attention to him when he was getting them but he was muttering something about the females being less colorful? Is that another way to tell them apart?

Also, how hardy are these guys?

I've never kept endlers, but I'm trying to keep up with the hype because just about everybody thinks they are HOT. The disadvantage with Endler's livebearer over the fancy guppy is that so far the Endler's females are rather plain fish, they generally have very little colour but the males are stunning.

Endlers are pretty hardy from what I've read. They will supposedly eat just about anything and tolerate a fairly wide range of kH/gH/pH and temperature. Still, don't hold me to that. Like I said, I've never kept them. I've just stared at the screen on Aquabid for a couple hours and drooled all over my keyboard.

Pics look accurate to me, that female is obviously enormously pregnant in that photo.

95% of endlers are already guppy crosses, true endlers are still quite rare, and if you keeping them with guppies which it sounds like by your first question then you will no longer have what can be called true.

If you can get a pic this will help as I'll try to ID them.

This is my yellow top sword which is a true endler.

Females are plain and slightly larger than the male, females should not get to the same size as females guppies, but be 10-20mm smaller, with no colour.
Males endlers will not carry any sword on the tail, my top sword refers to colour in to top of the tail as u can see in the pic not an sworde as in what a elongated tail. Also the Dorsal should be small, no true endlers should have a long dorsal.

If you were sold fry then maybe theyd be hard to tell apart, but if you have adult endlers there will be no question which are the males and which are the females. Your Endler male is pint sized, smaller than a male guppy and very easy to distinguish from a male guppy. They have differently shaped tails than guppies and their dorsal fins are pointed and extremely visible when the males display. While male guppies that have not been crossed with Endlers have rather uniform colour patterns endlers have mutlicolour patterns across their bodies.

Distinguishing male Endlers from females is as easy as telling apart guppies from Endlers. The females are drab olive colours and substantially larger than the males. Compared to your female guppy, the endler female is smaller, less colourful and in my opinion much more mindless in their pursuit of food :p. I suspect guppy females started out much like Endlers, colourless, but through generations of selective breeding female guppies with colour came out. For example, I have a female Endler who has the faintest, almost indetectible green colour near her tail fin. It's possible that if I bred her and selectively bred her spawn and theirs and so on I could establish a population of Endler females with green coloured tails. This is my theory anyways, just because Endlers are so much rarer in the hobby and have been used far less in breeding. Id be interested in what Helter thinks about that though since he's more knowledgeable on the subject than I am. Actually if he disagrees with anything I've said you can go with him, but Im pretty sure I got it right :p.

My endlers are (I believe) full grown, and soory bought my first post, guess it was a bit confusing, as it stand there are 7 of them remaining (1 dissappered, no body no nothing ) they're in a 2.5gallon isolation tank, all but about 2 are very nicly colored and they're not housed with guppies, although I may end up doing so if none of mine are females, as I do want some babies.

If they have colour then they aren't females. If they are colourless they are. If you have some colourless ones you should be seeing fry relatively soon.

I was told by Bloo,
the female will remain just plain with perhaps a very slight tinge of light yellow
, so I've had my question answered now.

Thanks for the help guys, especially you Bloo :D

You can tell whether an endler is pure strain after about the 3rd generation of fry. Once you get there, if your females start to show a hint of colour, then they may not be pure. I realised this with my endlers.

ok im 100% sure the fist pic is a endler female... i have them

the way to tell is they will look like a guppy but with NO color, true endlers's females have no color

also endlers are very hardy... for instance my tank has no heater, and the past few weeks off and on the apt has been cold, so im sure the temp has been variying pretty bad. no problem for them.... also during the summer i caught a glimse of the tank at 92degrees F ... its prolly like at 70 now...

also hey most of you are in the uk, but for the usa posters here i have pure endlers livebears(got from AoA) for sale just pm me
