I have recently heard from a person at my lfs that these 3 were put on the endangered species list. Not sure if its true or not, but it would be nice if someone can confirm this along with other species.

Endangered no, technically banned from export yes.

swing over to the planetcatfish and plecofanatics fora, there are numerous threads on this

The store i currently work for in the UK has had L333 temporarilly removed from the list to initiate a "controlled" catch program, where only x amount of individuals can be removed in a season to keep the population up (ie not wipe them out like the galaxy rasbora fiasco) as such i snapped up the remaining L333 hyp. Zebras at work and am now attempting to breed them.
On that note any help on water prameters etc would be awesome, ive never bred hypancisterous before!

Water in my tank is

Nitrate 5 ppm
Hardness 80 GH
Temp 28 C
Ph 6.8

Also, would the botia sidthemunki i have in the tank need removing as they are a possible threat to the eggs?

Sorry for the thread jack

those seem to be alright, whats your nitrite level at? thats more important than your nitrate.
and L333's are not hypancistrus zebra, they're hypancistrus species but i don't think they have a full scientific name. their common name is king tiger pleco i think. the required qater stats, i can imagine being the same.

as for these fish being endangered... they're not, they're probably some of the most common "luxurious" pleco's you can buy.

king tiger plecs are L066

yeah that would be hypancisterus "zebra" its a common name thing im afraid, but still L333 its the correct fish

The nitrite levels are 0

Regarding the "endangered" i think its just a controlled seasonal catch now, so we cant just yank out the fish year round, so like i say controlled catching (a rather good way to deal with it to be honest)

Nothing to do with common names, Hypancistrus zebra is a described species which was prior to being described given the L46 tag.

L333 is officially banned from export, its just whether IBAMA and other agencies polices the exportation

Can't make it much simpler than that lol...

ma bad! i knew that and have no idea why i put i thought L333's are king tiger plecos.
L333 dont even have a common name lol they look pretty much the same though!

They are still frequently imported into the uk, and still on the stocking lists for several stores ive enquired in, this may just be a case for the uk. And regarding the naming, its a common name shops use to sell it, how many times have you looked at "upside down catfish" to find its not synodontis nigreventis? I mean look at "chipmunk loach" or "dinosaur eel" certainly not a name you see over here in the UK, thats a common name you find for them fish in the uk, so forgive me for saying tomato when you say tamato!

That's one of many common names used, which still doesn't make it correct and just goes to show the problems you run into when using common names...
