Ok, I'm nearing the end of the cycling process for my 10 gallon but I have one question. When my ammonia and nitrite are at 0 ppm, and my nitrate is at 20-30 ppm, do I need to wait a week before adding new fish, or can I just do a 50% water change to reduce nitrates, and then add fish immiediately after the water change?

Thanks in advance for everyone's input :)

When the ammonia and nitrite are both 0 then it is safe to put in fish at any time. Do as large a water change as you can to dilute nitrates and any elements left over from the cycle and refresh the water in general. There are no fish in the tank, so even a 100% waterchange is not unfeasble.

Also emember to keep adding ammonia until the very day that that do the waterchange and add the fish.

Happy fishkeeping!

Make sure that water you are putting in your tank is dechlorinated or it will kill all that beneficial bacteria. And its harmful to fish.

what about those who did a fishy cycle can they add fish right away when A&N is at 0. My tank finished it's cycle about 4days ago and I got a couple today, I was going to wait until the weekend, but i got bored so I decided to go to my LFS and just go window shopping but ended up buying anyways. My Aunt is also taking me out to my LFS this weekend to buy my final stock, I this a good idea?. I hope my tank doesn't go into a minicycle because of this....
